Father Dominic Biography:
Father Dominic Baffour-Akowuah was born on August 15, 1955
in the village of Ampabame II, located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana,
the oldest child of 9 children born to Farid Appaih and Theresa
Konadu. Father Dominic’s father, Farid, was a
practicing Muslim. His mother, Theresa, was a practicing Roman
Catholic.
Father Dominic attended Ampabame II
Roman Catholic elementary school. At age 15, Dominic then joined St.
Hubert Seminary in Kumasi, also located in the Ashanti Region of
Ghana
Seven years later, Dominic began
studies in philosophy, and then in theology at St. Peter’s Regional
Seminary in Cape Coast, located in the Central Region of Ghana.
On July 15, 1984, Fr. Dominic was
ordained into the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kumasi.
From 1989 to 1991, Fr. Dominic
studied pastoral theology at the St. John
Lateran University in
Rome, Italy.
It was during these years that Fr. Dominic first
visited the United States, where he assisted at St. Ambrose Parish
in Rochester (Irondequoit), New York. Fr. Dominic has been
associated with St. Ambrose Parish since 1990 and has spent many of
the last 15 summers here in the U.S.
In 2002, Father Dominic assisted at
Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish in Forest Hills, New York (in the
borough of Queens), part of the Brooklyn Diocese of New York.
During the latter half of 2005, Father
Dominic assisted as a Visiting Priest at parishes in Sodus, New York (Church of the
Epiphany) and Sodus Point, New York (Mission of St. Rose) and made
many more dear friends during his stay there.
Father Dominic's powerful and moving
homilies were, and continue to be, inspirational to all of us, and the
number of his friends continues to multiply as to touches our lives
with his grace, his kindness and his humility.
